Barb Haney
Bass Clarinet
A native Philadelphian, Dr. Barbara Haney grew up listening to that city's great orchestra, then studying clarinet with two of its members, bass clarinetist Ronald Reuben and Principal Clarinetist Anthony Gigliotti. After completing her Bachelor of Music from Temple University, she went on to study with Stanley Hasty at the Eastman School, earning both a Master’s and the Performers’ Certificate, followed by the Doctor of Musical Arts from the Catholic University in Washington. She was a member of the United States Marine Band for 22 years, initially serving as clarinetist, then as principal bass clarinetist, and was featured as soloist and chamber musician on numerous occasions. Barbara performs with a wide range of D.C.-area ensembles, among them the Fairfax Symphony and orchestras of the Washington Ballet and Manassas Ballet. She is also an active bass clarinet recitalist, devoted to expanding its literature by commissioning and presenting world premiere solo works at the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest several times in recent years. Barbara is an avid student of Italian language and culture, and combines her musical and non-musical interests during the month each year she spends as Musician in Residence of the Università per Stranieri in Perugia, Italy.
